Many drivers commit themselves to servicing their vehicles through dealerships out of fear they will void their warranty if they go elsewhere, often costing more money or resulting in an inadequate service.
If you purchase a new Mercedes or VW commercial van and have an independent or specialist mechanic of choice that you would prefer to use, the good news is there will be no impacts on your warranty.
Manufacturer warranties in Australia in most cases do not require that a new car must be serviced by the manufacturer’s authorised dealers.
Although some dealerships will try to tell you otherwise, this has never been the case. Historically, the issue has laid with the availability of technical information to independent mechanics. But this has all changed, thanks to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
ACCC introduce new data-sharing rules
The ACCC conducted a report on the new car retailing industry to determine issues faced by independent repairers in 2017, to ensure access to technical information needed to repair and service new cars was readily available to them.
Following this report, car retailers and manufacturers are obliged to sell vehicle service and repair information to Australian independent repairers at a fair market price to provide flexibility to new car owners.
Car manufacturers previously had the option to provide this information to their franchise dealers only, and would not share it with the wider repair network. This law, which is the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, makes it easier for your independent mechanic to access technical information about your vehicle.
You can be confident in knowing that you no longer need to ask your dealership “will I void my Mercedes or VW commercial van warranty if I use an independent mechanic?”
Why should you use an independent mechanic?
Independent mechanics can provide a more specialised service than larger dealership service providers, with a more personalised approach to your vehicle. You are more likely to experience a better level of customer service and a higher level of expertise with your type of vehicle.
Independent mechanics specialising in particular vehicle brands usually have more mechanical training having worked in specialised roles, as well as senior positions at dealerships previously. This gives them a more well-rounded knowledge of the car servicing industry.
This higher level of experience can also lead to finding faults that dealerships may otherwise miss due to their heavy workload and lack of experience working with Mercedes and VW Vans.
There are usually cost savings when using independent mechanics with lower prices available if you shop around, or if you have a regular mechanic who you know and trust.
