Timing belts and timing chains can impact the performance of European cars such as Mercedes, BMW, VW, Audi, Mini and Skoda.
In this article, Shlomi Kuba, owner and mechanical engineer, looks at why timing belts and timing chains fail and how to know when it’s time for a replacement.
Why do Euro Car Timing Belts and Timing Chains Fail?
The three most common reasons that timing belts and timing chains fail are:
- Wear and Tear: Timing belts and timing chains are under constant stress and friction as they synchronise the engine’s camshaft and crankshaft rotations. Over time, materials fatigue, leading to cracks, fraying and eventual failure.
- Lack of Maintenance: Skipping scheduled maintenance can lead to premature failure. Timing chains usually last longer than timing belts but still require lubrication and tension adjustments to function correctly.
- Chemical Contamination: Exposure to oils, coolants and other chemicals can progressively damage the rubber material of the timing belts, which increases the risk of failure.
What happens when a Timing Belt or Timing Chain Fails?
If your timing belt or timing chain fails, here are some of the things that can happen:
- Loss of Power and Stalling: Your engine can lose power and stall. With the timing belt or chain unable to synchronise the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft(s), the engine stops running.
- Damage to Engine: In interference engines, where the clearance between the piston heads and valve heads is minimal, it can result in bent valves, damaged pistons and costly engine damage.
- Poor Performance: The timing of the engine’s internal processes will be off, leading to reduced power and efficiency, rough idling, and difficulty starting the engine.
Knowing When to Get Your Timing Belt or Chain Replaced.
To ensure timely maintenance, consult your Euro mechanic and check the manufacturer’s recommendations. Unusual noises, like whirring or ticking from the engine or issues with starting or idling, are indicators that it’s time for a check-up.
